How animation start order works in Creative Studio

How Creative Studio determines the start order of animations, and how to troubleshoot unexpected animation timing.

Written by David Aslanyan

Creative Studio evaluates animated elements using a fixed set of rules, applied in order until the correct start position is determined.

1. Items designed to start together

Animations set to begin at the same time share the same start moment. Effect-only or add-on animations don't interrupt the main animation flow, so related elements animate in sync and supporting effects don't delay primary content.

2. Group hierarchy is respected

A group animates before the items inside it. Items nested deeper usually start later. This means larger container elements animate first, with smaller details following in sequence.

3. Layer order influences timing

Items lower in the layer stack animate earlier; items higher animate later. This matches the visual build-up of the design — background elements before foreground elements.

4. Position and animation direction refine the order

When other rules don't decide, Creative Studio uses the item's position on the spread and its movement direction:

  • No movement: items animate top to bottom.

  • Left-to-right motion: items closer to the left edge animate first.

  • Bottom-to-top motion: items closer to the bottom edge animate first.

Troubleshooting unexpected animation order

If an item animates earlier than expected, check in this order:

  • Is it set to start together with others? Review which items are configured to start simultaneously; remove from the shared group if needed.

  • Is it a group or parent element? Groups animate before their contents — ungroup items if you want them to animate earlier.

  • Is it lower in the layer stack? Open the Layers panel and move the item up or down to adjust its timing.

  • Is its position influencing the order? Check where the item sits on the spread and adjust its placement or animation direction.
