Using the text flow option for text boxes

Thread text boxes so text flows between them: create and connect threads, add boxes in a sequence, and unthread without losing text.

Written by David Aslanyan

Sometimes you need text to flow from one text box to another on the same spread. To do that, you thread the text boxes together.

Thread text boxes

Text in a text box can be independent, or it can flow between connected (threaded) frames. Each text box has an in port and an out port used to make the connections. An arrow in a port means it's connected to another text box:

If you paste text into a small text box, a plus sign appears in the out port, meaning there's more text than the frame can fit. Click the plus sign, position the text icon where you want the new text box, and click.

Add a new text box to the thread

  1. Place a text box on the publication page.

  2. With the text box selected, click the in port to load the text icon.

  3. Position the text icon where you want the new text box, then click or drag to create it.

Make the text flow through the text boxes

You can create the threaded text boxes in advance, then type or paste the text into them.

Add an existing text box to the thread

  1. Select the text box and click the in port or out port to activate the text icon.

  2. Position the text icon over the text box you want to connect to, then click it.

Add a text box inside a sequence of threaded text boxes

If you already have a thread of two connected text boxes and need to add a new one in between:

  1. Select the initial text box and click the out port.

  2. The text icon appears.

  3. Click where you want the new text box to appear, and resize it if needed by dragging its corners.

Unthread text boxes

To disconnect threaded text boxes, you unthread them. Any text that was in the thread becomes overset text. No text is deleted when you unthread.

  1. Click the out port of the first text box, or the in port of the second.

  2. When the text icon appears, position it over the previous or next text box to show the unthread icon.

  3. Click the text box you want to remove from the thread.
