View retention rate of new readers

How to use the Retention section in Analytics to track how often new readers return over time.

Written by David Aslanyan

The Retention section in Analytics shows the percentage of new readers who return to your publications over time.

  1. Navigate to Analytics on the left sidebar.

  2. Use the dropdown on the right to select Behavior, then go to Retention.

  3. Apply the main filters:

    • Select the collection name.

    • Specify the date range (default: last 7 days).

💡 Enter a reader's email in the Reader field to filter for a specific person. You can also use filters and segmentation for in-depth data.

  4. Click the # button to view absolute numbers instead of percentages.

  5. Select a view by Day/Week/Month to see the retention rate over different periods.

  6. Review the retention table:

    • Date: The start of the selected period (e.g., for month view with Sep–Dec range: Sep 1, Oct 1, Nov 1).

    • Readers: First-time readers during that specific row's date range.

    • Retained period: Percentage of readers from that row who had activity in subsequent periods. The first period column (<1) is always 100%.

Tip: When viewing by week, periods start on Monday. When viewing by month, periods start on the first of the month.
